Ep 4 Beer tasting with J.Taylor (TheHappymonBand)

Ep 4 Jim Taylor & Matt Durno
Pt 1 of 2
PODCAST MP3 PLAYER AT THE BOTTOM

I ask for leniency when listening to this particular session.  The lapel microphones were picking up interference and humming in certain segments of the recording.  I had to export the WAV files of the effected tracks,  apply noise removal, filters, etc, to remove or soften the static noise.  This was a 3 hr process.  When I tried to import the cleaned track, my KORG wasn’t having it.  So.. I had to play the track into it’s home channel by pressing REC and play on external player simultaneously. This created a new problem:  the motor on the numark was apparently a tad faster than the KORGs CD player motor.  This caused timing/speed/sync issues.  If you here some stadium echo, I’m sorry about that.  It gets better.
Jim Taylor of The Happymon Band & bassist/guitarist/home brewer Matt Durno talk IPA and the brewing process.
Pt 2: In light of the interesting conversation that my distorted recollection prompted,  I left those precious moments in.  I should stick to talking music & only just drinking  beer. ;)

photos by Melea Martin.  Jim Taylor in addition to doing monthly beer tasting presentations at Michael Charles Wines, is the drummer from the Jimmy Buffet Tribute Band THE HAPPYMON BAND.  I enjoy Jim’s articulate commentary on beer ingredients and the brewing process.  This is a must-partake in event if you like craft beer.  Click the link above to read more about Michael Charles Wine & Beers.  For $8-$10 you can taste 8 sometimes 9 different beers.  If you like the podcast and hearing Jim’s vast knowledge you should go to their beer tasting events which are the 1st SAT of every month.  This session we tasted mostly IPAs giving our buds only one break with the Hopping Frog Double Pumkin Ale.  My wonderful wife brought us out some punkin pie to compliment this incredibly sweet and charismatic beer.  My friend and fellow musician Matt Durno, who also brews him own beer, brought his own IPA “You Hoppy Bastard.”  Matt is also very well versed in the art of beer brewing and takes the process to a mad scientist level.  I call him the Walter White (Breaking Bad) of beer brewing.  Matt also plays the bass and guitar.

We first tasted Rustbelt’s Oldman Hopper, moving on to Matt’s You Hoppy Bastard.  Giving our buds a break we departed briefly from the IPAs and tasted Hopping Frog’s Double Punkin Ale.  We closed with Rustbelt’s PEACEMAKER double IPA at 98 IBU and 8.5% ABV.  Please stop down to Rustbelt Brewery in Ytown and get yourself a few growlers or a case.  My favorite is the Irish Red, but Coke Oven Stout is right up there if you like a hearty beer with rich character. You’ll have to listen to hear our reviews.  It was fun and informative.  With every “taste” I found myself more willing to talk outside of my knowledge base, so I appologize if I crossed my beer facts.  I mentioned listening to a audio editorial on the history of beer, wherein the historian spoke about some beers were early on called wine, more specific  “barley wine.”  Here’ something that speaks to that reference.  Barley Wine Vs Beer.  Thank you Ken and Brian for allowing me to get the peacemaker in the nick of time.
