<itunes:summary>As a young teen we make mental notes of the names of amazing guitarists and drummers that we hear about from the mouths of our peers or reading about them in the last Hit Parader Mag. We also make notes of the names of amazing musicians that live in our community and those names begin to construct a relative context of who's who around town. For me, Nick Giannakos was one of those local up-and-coming legends. I heard his name back in high school in the 80's and the collective word of mouth seemed to indicate that this guy was a bad-ass metal axeman; a shredder. I had heard that he worked at Warren Music or some music store and I had also heard of his band WRETCH. It's surprising, but the two of us had never crossed paths over the decades, and I'm sure we've performed on the same stages. I was happy to have finally met him and he made a great first impression. Nick was a very cool down to earth guy who listens to alot of the same metal music I do. Click on the podplayer now and read while you listen. I also recommend listening to other interviews while you post photos of kittens, favorite football players, or the latest cinnamon experiment youtube video on crackbook.

Playing with Castle Black and power metal bands Breaker and Wretch, Nick has played with heavy hard hitters Colin Watson, Mike Cykon, Tim Fredrick, Chris Koshock, Dave Hayes, Shaun Vanek, Butch Likens, and many more. Wretch has performed in Germany and to this day the Headbangers Open Air Metal Festival uses their song "Make This Garden Burn" as their event anniversary song. They've been featured in HEAVY Magazine and on the Heavy Artillery Compilation. Please type in your email below and give a short review or leave a comment. Enjoy.

LEFT END was the quintessential local hard rock band of the 70’ and 80’s in the Mahoning Valley club scene.

Could you imagine a Left End without Dennis? I couldn’t. Yet, the band started as an R&B outfit with a soulful singer named Odie Crook. The night Left End played their final show with Odie at The Apartment in Youngstown Dennis Sesonsky of the fusion band “Holy Mackerel” walked in backstage and told the band he wanted in. The rest is history. The local music scene was never the same again.

What great shows in the 70’s at the Packard Music Hall in Warren. Thousands of people packed the hall to hear Left End peel the paint and bring the roof down in a proper concert setting. All those hot and sweaty club gigs at Lefty & Jim’s and Foxy’s burned the memory into our brains much like the silhouettes of Japanese citizens burned onto concrete walls left standing after the bomb fell on Hiroshima. Life changing experiences for sure. The powerful wall of sound. The flamboyant stage presence of Dennis T. Menace leading his rock-n-roll army decked in mini-skirts and wedding dresses. We were ready and willing to submit to his command of the crowds. HOGHEAD!

Even in their twilight years in the early 2000’s the band still rocked with the power of their heyday. What pleasure to introduce a whole new generation to the Left End experience as I did when I took my 16-year old son for his first concert at Yankee Lake in 2003 when the band opened for Ted Nugent and Z Z Top. What a show! The rain let up just before Left End took the stage and gave the muddy campgrounds a sunny Woodstock vibe for the rest of the day. We’ll never forget that show, even though I heard that the little old band from Texas wasn’t very cordial with their opening act. Dennis and Co. have opened for many big national acts and he has plenty of backstage tales to tell of rubbing shoulders with rock’s royalty.

Wish we could bring them back for more encore performances. What a band! The music of Left End lives on. Thanks Dennis!

Tim Frederick walked into my living room one day in 1987, looking like an Amish Heavy Metal fan, and said "Man! you're a hard guy to get a hold of." Cool peculiar like most bass players, it wasn't long before we were jamming with him. I can remember doing songs with him, PJ Reese, and Rob Sheitrump like "Highway Star" and Alice Cooper's "Under My Wheels."
He was shy but aggressive with the 4-string. You've heard stories or the phrase "Mispent Youths" leading to stand-out talent. Well, Tim is one of those achetypes in real life.

He's a hard working multi-talented guy who always has many musical irons in the fire. He's played in bands like Easy Action, Rat Salad (Sabbath Tribute Band ) Diligaf, Happy Hour, Buzzer, Detrimetal, Peroxide, Paul Rader Band, Damian Knapp band, decimater, Castle Black and many more. Musicians and Friends are often two worlds, and with Tim Frederick you get the best of both worlds.

<itunes:summary>All of us heavy-heads and fans of ultra talented circus freak musicians are always looking for that next new band or sound. In 1990 I got my ear-whistle wet when I heard the band from New Castle PA COINMONSTER, performing at the old Penguin Pub in Youngstown Ohio. I remember being impressed by how fast and intricate Dave Galazia's drumming was and the cool-quirky stage antics of the guitar player. These guys were stand-out and they kept you in suspense with each original riff and transition; their song structures having no loyalty to the PRIOR riff & transition. NE Ohio musicians had a new inspiration maybe some might of even said.. a rich man's poor man's KingsX.

"When you play at home, you can make a lot at the door, but if you play in Detroit you don't make sh*t." Record Labels don't want bands that draw 600 people at home but only draw 5 people away from home."

The Coinmonster of 1990 separated from their vocalist and guitarist Jon Reider and the new Coinmonster began cranking out albums, and cranking up the musical execution and intricacies. Their avant-garde style and pre-written improvy jazz arrangments really distinguished them as a heavy weight in the Youngstown area. Their stage presence and antics really suited their music, which made for an entertaining show. Coinmonster was making a name for themselves and had a few moments of exposure getting their music heard on the HBO series "Six Feed Under," and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as well as ranking #1 on several college radio charts. Jon and I talked about those moments, the history of coinmonster, the necessary gamble of going all in.. touring..leaving home, to make it big and get signed as well as what that means. I found Jon to be down to earth, fonzi-like, and modest. It was the best interview so far. We talked about being content and really got deep into Jon's personal retrospective review of the past and the future of Coinmonster; the band of his life.

<itunes:summary>When you have lived in a town for a good number of years and you're a performing musician, it's easy to believe that you know anybody who's anybody in the local music arena. When I first heard NE Ohio guitarist Tim Owen play his guitar, I realized how naive that belief was. It was the year 2000 and my sister tells me about this friend and neighbor who plays guitar, heard my band jamming one night, and wanted to try out. That neighbor was Tim Owen. Tim played in a band in the early 90's called CULPEPPER LEFT. CULPEPPER LEFT was Tim Silker, Bob Morris, Gary Pirrung, and I believe Shawn Taylor. (listen for the details below) He was also the guitarist for the band featuring Sheri K called LITTLE QUEEN before joining my band DOWNLOAD in 2000. Special Thanks to Thad Weston for the DOWNLOAD demo recordings.

Tim is one of those perfectionist meticulous people with discipline who can focus and dedicate himself when it comes to something he enjoys. He's a rock guitarist with a classical education who has a signature sound with a rock-solid presence, which is merely just a respective manifestation of who he is. I enjoyed being in a band with him and appreciate his musicianship. If you have the pleasure of running into Tim and there's a guitar nearby; ask him to play a classical piece or a bluegrass classic. He's not only a great metal/hard rock guitarist; he's a cross-pickin madman.

<itunes:summary> Asleep guitarist Dean and I have been trying to get together since we first met during SXSW Music Conference at the Gypsy Lounge in Austin Texas. Although Punchy the 15 foot robot made more of an impression on me, Dean, Tod, and the other members of the band struck me as down to earth and how do you say... cool? Yeah! They were cool guys with a cool heavy sound. I really enjoy the song "Big Sister" because it's dark and it's one of those songs that without even breaking down the lyrics, the audio aura tells you there's a story behind the music; an eerie story in this case. Asleep has played with national acts such as TRAPT and The Deftones at the House of Blues in Cleveland. They have played shows in Cincinnati, Louisville KY, and have recorded in Long Island NY as well. Asleep will make their second appearance at SXSW in Austin Texas. This is a showcase that attracts over 1000 AnR Record Executives.

If you buy Asleep's new album "Unpleasant Companion" on vinyl or whichever medium, you will find out that the album was recorded and engineered by Steve Albini, who is made a name for himself producing the final Nirvana Album "In Utero." Albini has worked with artists such as the Jesus Lizard, The pixies, The Stooges, Cheap Trick and most recently in addition to producing the "Unpleasant Companion" LP, has worked with The Wedding Present, who will also be performing live at SXSW2012. You can also pick up the LP at Havanna House in Boardman Ohio or the Asleep Facebook page. Get behind this band and make a donation if you feel so inclined.

"I was like.. Here I am.., at Steve Albini's studio with my Mesa Boogie.." --Dean

It was really enjoyable talking with Dean. He's a smart dude with a good sense of humor and the kind of sense of weirdness I like. When this show spins off occasionally to do a comedy podcast, he's a guy I will call up. It's always a good time running into Dave Mooney. Dave was the younger brother of a friend of mine, Mike Mooney. Dave's a talented musician and a confident guy with a charismatic way and cocky sense of humor. When I first met him I played out alot and he would talk about his band he was putting together and I initially dismissed it as beer ambition. He went on to put together to tightest band that I've ever heard in this local area; that band was TWITCH. At that time he was the front man, whereas now playing with REZNIK he is the drummer. Brandyn also played in TWITCH, and although I never knew him on a personal level, his riff arsenal was funky and spunky. He had a good metal sound and polished execution. Brandyn got himself some fat strings and now plays bass guitar.
Reznik is Brandyn Thomas, Sean McDonald, Thomas Russell, and Dave Mooney. Brandyn and Dave worked on the music for a couple years before Dave went on a hiatus. Brandyn found Sean McDonald via Craig's list who finished off the music by writing the lyrics and taking over lead vocals. Brandyn brought in young Thomas, a long time family acquaintance, for lead guitar. After a couple drummers, Dave returned and now Reznik is back and better than ever.

Corrections:
We talked about the movie "The Machinist" and it's relation to the name REZNIK. I confused it with the movie "The Mechanic" whereby Jason Statham is a homosexual serial killer. Daytrotter Studio is based in Rock Island Illinoise.
The band out of Akron is called Strange Familiar.

<itunes:summary>I was lucky enough to catch a DOLSON set at the Lemon Grove in Youngstown Ohio, in the summer of 2011. I have to admit that in the last decade in NE Ohio I've become a bit conditioned to expect deluxe garage band sounds when attending original music shows. On this night, I was drawn to a cohesive wall of sound from this four piece piano-oriented band out of Akron Ohio. The music was organic and the execution was well rehearsed.
Dolson has performed in Akron, Columbus, and has also opened for bands like Red Wanting Blue. If you like the songs featured on the podcast you can buy their trial size non-EP at their shows. You may have heard their song "It's not over" on FM 90.7.They will be releasing a full length album this summer. You can also see them at the NACA Mid Altantic Festival. They were extremely cool and down to earth guys. I enjoyed our conversation. Although the sound quality of this particular podcast is sub-par, the content is off-setting in a positive way that I'm sure you'll appreciate. I hope to sit down with them again and preview songs from their upcoming album.

<itunes:summary>My first instance of inner dialogue that I had with myself, reacting to hearing Third Class, was something along the line of.. Hmmm.. this is different. Beat to beat, measure to measure, verse to chorus? I was in suspense; and that's where I like to be when consuming music or a movie. Third Class caught my ear instantly because they were not self-shackled to conventional song structure nor did their music seem to have any interest in mingling with friendly melodies and safe progressions. I've never been that "indie" person who goes out of their way to find obscure bands primarily because they ARE.. obscure, and become non-indie as soon as more than seven people know who there are. I objectively process new music and honestly determine if I like how it sounds, or if I don't; and I just liked how Third Class's music sounded.

Lee, Jack, and Pepe are polite and interesting guys. I totally relate to their attitudes and share many of their eccentricities. They work hard and are consistent and persistent. We covered so many topics and kicked off the interview with the surprise topic in response to my silly rhetoric icebreaker question about back masking to talk to aliens. There is a lot to take away if you are an artist who hasn't recorded or who has but hasn't had the resources to go the distance and get your music mastered and mass-produced. It was also enjoyable getting into their heads and analyzing their writing process. I appreciated their honesty and that they were comfortable sharing personal stories and insight into their personal relationships. Third Class has toured outside of Ohio several times, visiting Detroit, Pittsburgh, Long Island, while still staying busy and active in our local scene playing legendary venues like Cedars Lounge and even Caribou Coffee in Boardman and Akron. In Alliance this Friday, see Third Class with the ZOU in Alliance at Jupitor Studios and Musica in Akron the following day.

<itunes:summary>On a random Thursday Karaoke night at a random Ground Round restaurant in Warren Ohio, I remember seeing this gal singer just blowing the roof off singing "You Outta Know" by Alanis Morissette. It was instantly evident that she had mega-talent and a strong voice with alot of emotion. That girl was Kelly McCracken of the band THE KELLYS.
It was extremely cool as well, to talk to original KELLYS drummer Mark Revis. Mark, at the tale end of playing and recording with the Warren based band DOWNLOAD, joined the Kellys and worked with Kelly and Company to craft their first full lenght album "Kelly's Greatest Hits." Hear "HappyHour" on the show as well as The Kellys brand new single "Let It Ride." Surprisingly, even with the departure of original Kellys bassist Moe Anglelo, this record is seasoned and polished. McCracken's vocals are less acrobatic, warmer sounding, and comfortable; staying home nestled appropriately within the melody. I can't stop singing this new song. I think they've found the cohesive amalgamated sound they've been slightly missing since their debut. The Kellys have worked hard and have been diligent in trying to get their music to the next level. I thought it was important to discuss the many guitarists and drummers that have come and gone as well as touch on the Moe Angelo leaving the band. Yep.. we went there. It's very easy to find four musicians who are highly talented and who can execute consistently on stage in sync to the same meter, but it's not as easy to get any number of musicians to play at that level and generate a cohesive amalgamated sound that is greater than the sum of it's parts. Listening to the new tracks on the news Cd "Opus" I think they may have found that sound.

Buy Kellys merchandise and check out their new video for "Victory" here-->. Kellys Music,

So sorry for the swishy Wah sounds. The wireless lapel microphones are finicky and sometimes produce unmanageable white noise. I try hard to keep production quality near top notch. Equipment upgrade coming soon.

<itunes:summary> Every musician who has visited a music store can tell you a story about that store's guitar specialist, and depending on what era that story took place in, can also tell you about their hairstyle and what cloths they wore. I have a distinct memory from 1980-somethin; buying drum sticks at Gray's music in Cortland Ohio and noticing this rock n roll fellow with spiked Don Dokken/Rod Stewart blond hair and decked out in shiny leopard print pants. That fellow was Jeff Welsh. I bought my first TOA PA System at Grays Music Store and I don't remember a time when Jeff wasn't teaching, repairing, or selling guitars. Jeff has taught dozens of students who went on to do great things, including Damian Knapp and Scott Gearhart. He was nice enough, and Dale was nice enough to allow me to bring my rig to Daybreak Music and sit down and talk about Mr.Welsh's musical history.

"As long as you are aware of your worth and confident with how you come across, you have to be happy with that."

All you need to do is take a ride through Trumbull/Mahoning County past the many bars, taverns, and clubs and you find that 1 of every 4 of those establishments have a marque displaying the name Jeff Welsh or The Jeff Welsh Band. Jeff has worked hard and played often, so he was in my top 10 list of people that needed to tell their story and be apart of this podcast project. I was amazed with his recollection of local musicians and their endeavors. He talked about his time with his first bands The Matt Cline band, Tight Fit, and his decade playing with Wild Oats. He played with a few national acts and got to tour. How cool is that? I think we all wish we had the touring band notch on our history belts. We also discussed the different configurations of The Jeff Welsh Band including current members John Fillkorn and Dan Streitferdt. Jeff shares with us his subtle frustration with not recording his music and not having a presentable body of work. He seemed inspired to get on that.. and I told him I'd hold him to it.
