Ep 8 feat Jeff Welsh

Every musician who has visited a music store can tell you a story about that store’s guitar specialist, and depending on what era that story took place in, can also tell you about their hairstyle and what cloths they wore.  I have a distinct memory from 1980-somethin;  buying drum sticks at Gray’s music in Cortland Ohio and noticing this rock n roll fellow with spiked Don Dokken/Rod Stewart blond hair and decked out in shiny leopard print pants.  That fellow was Jeff Welsh.  I bought my first TOA PA System at Grays Music Store and I don’t remember a time when Jeff wasn’t teaching, repairing, or selling guitars. Jeff has taught dozens of students who went on to do great things, including Damian Knapp and Scott Gearhart.  He was nice enough, and Dale was nice enough to allow me to bring my rig to Daybreak Music and sit down and talk about Mr.Welsh’s musical history.

“As long as you are aware of your worth and confident with how you come across, you have to be happy with that.”

All you need to do is take a ride through Trumbull/Mahoning County past the many bars, taverns, and clubs and you find that 1 of every 4 of those establishments have a marque displaying the name Jeff Welsh or The Jeff Welsh Band. Jeff has worked hard and played often, so he was in my top 10 list of people that needed to tell their story and be apart of this podcast project.  I was amazed with his recollection of local musicians and their endeavors.  He talked about his time with his first bands The Matt Cline band, Tight Fit,  and his decade playing with Wild Oats.  He played with a few national acts and got to tour.  How cool is that?  I think we all wish we had the touring band notch on our history belts. We also discussed the different configurations of The Jeff Welsh Band including current members  John Fillkorn and Dan Streitferdt. Jeff shares with us his subtle frustration with not recording his music and not having a presentable body of work.  He seemed inspired to get on that.. and I told him I’d hold him to it.
