Ep 13 Reznik

It’s always a good time running into Dave Mooney. Dave was the younger brother of a friend of mine, Mike Mooney.  Dave’s a talented musician and a confident guy with a charismatic way and cocky sense of humor.  When I first met him I played out alot and he would talk about his band he was putting together and I initially dismissed it as beer ambition.  He went on to put together to tightest band that I’ve ever heard in this local area; that band was TWITCH.  At that time he was the front man, whereas now playing with REZNIK he is the drummer.  Brandyn also played in TWITCH, and although I never knew him on a personal level, his riff arsenal was funky and spunky.  He had a good metal sound and polished execution.  Brandyn got himself some fat strings and now plays bass guitar.

Reznik is Brandyn Thomas, Sean McDonald, Thomas Russell, and Dave Mooney. Brandyn  and Dave  worked on the music for a couple years before Dave went on a hiatus. Brandyn found Sean McDonald via Craig’s list who finished off the music by writing the lyrics and taking over lead vocals. Brandyn brought in young Thomas, a long time family acquaintance, for lead guitar. After a couple drummers, Dave returned and now Reznik is back and better than ever.

Corrections:
We talked about the movie “The Machinist” and it’s relation to the name REZNIK. I confused it with the movie “The Mechanic” whereby Jason Statham is a homosexual serial killer.   Daytrotter Studio is based in Rock Island Illinoise.
The band out of Akron is called Strange Familiar.

Ep 12 DOLSON

I was lucky enough to catch a DOLSON set at the Lemon Grove in Youngstown Ohio,  in the summer of 2011.  I have to admit that in the last decade in NE Ohio I’ve become a bit conditioned to expect deluxe garage band sounds when attending original music shows.  On this night, I was drawn to a cohesive wall of sound from this four piece piano-oriented band out of Akron Ohio.  The music was organic and the execution was well rehearsed.

Dolson has performed in Akron, Columbus, and has also opened for bands like Red Wanting Blue.  If you like the songs featured on the podcast you can buy their trial size non-EP at their shows. You may have heard their song “It’s not over” on FM 90.7.They will be releasing a full length album this summer.  You can also see them at the  NACA Mid Altantic Festival. They were extremely cool and down to earth guys. I enjoyed our conversation.  Although the sound quality of this particular podcast is sub-par, the content is off-setting in a positive way that I’m sure you’ll appreciate.  I hope to sit down with them again and preview songs from their upcoming album.

Ep 11 Third Class

My first instance of inner dialogue that I had with myself, reacting to hearing Third Class, was something along the line of.. Hmmm.. this is different. Beat to beat,  measure to measure, verse to chorus? I was in suspense; and that’s where I like to be when consuming music or a movie. Third Class caught my ear instantly because they were not self-shackled to conventional song structure nor did their music seem to have any interest in mingling with friendly melodies and safe progressions.  I’ve never been that “indie” person who goes out of their way to find obscure bands primarily because they ARE.. obscure, and become non-indie as soon as more than seven people know who there are.  I objectively process new music and honestly determine if I like how it sounds, or if I don’t; and I just liked how Third Class’s music sounded.

Lee, Jack, and Pepe are polite and interesting guys.  I totally relate to their attitudes and share many of their eccentricities.  They work hard and are consistent and persistent.  We covered so many topics and kicked off the interview with the  surprise topic in response to my silly rhetoric  icebreaker question about back masking to talk to aliens. There is a lot to take away if you are an artist who hasn’t recorded or who has but hasn’t had the resources to go the distance and get your music mastered and mass-produced. It was also enjoyable getting into their heads and analyzing their writing process.  I appreciated their honesty and that they were comfortable sharing personal stories and insight into their personal relationships.  Third Class has toured outside of Ohio several times, visiting Detroit, Pittsburgh, Long Island, while still staying busy and active in our local scene playing legendary venues like Cedars Lounge and even Caribou Coffee in Boardman and Akron.  In Alliance this Friday, see Third Class with the ZOU in Alliance at Jupitor Studios and Musica in Akron the following day.

“Some of the most memorable things I’ve done have been with this band.”  -Pepe Parish

Brainfarts, hipster vernacular butcher-ings,  & word manglings: CD industry standard “Red Book”  Mike Garrigan‘s song “October” lyric:  “Said I’m tired, I’ve been running out of empty all I have is candy bars and costumes to DEFEND me.”
